Ecclesiastes 3:13 “I’ve decided that there’s nothing better to do than go ahead and have a good time and get the most we can out of life. That’s it—eat, drink, and make the most of your job. It’s God’s gift.”
February 2017, in response to the recent presidential election and stymied in the church planting process, I felt a need begged addressing in my community. My people were in their corners, tending to wounds, no matter which side of the political line they fell. The landscape felt unsure to many of us and I knew I had to do something.
Here’s what I threw out to Facebook Land:
Hey Boulder County Friends,
We want to make the world a better place and it begins with diverse community. We are hosting a dinner gathering at our house on February 24. Taco meat and beans will be provided, so bring an accompanying item to share, your family, drinks, a friend (all are welcome), and an open heart and mind. Send me a message to let me know if you’re coming, or an email. My hope is we can engage in healthy dialogue and build our expression of generosity in a fractured environment.
So, on a chilly night in the dead of winter, we had FIFTY people visit our home for our very first Community Dinner. With all the furniture moved out of my mid-century brick ranch, we feasted and chatted and rested from the rhetoric of the world.
The dinners have remained. So far we have gathered FIFTEEN times and counting. The evenings are a highlight of my month. I am consistently impressed with our food selections and some meals feel like a loaves and fishes experience, but there’s always more than enough to feed our bellies and souls.
For those of you who’ve been able to join us, thank you. It means the world to me to give us all this opportunity to connect and feast. For those of you who haven’t, will you?
Your next chance is June 15 – a dinner combined with a house concert. We’ll be outside enjoying the sensations of summer. I hope you’ll join us. Feel free to contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org and I’ll send you the details.
